Embracing Reflective Teaching: Insights from My Chat with Nancy on The Schoolyard Podcast
Reflective Teaching and SEL To Create Positive Change
I am thrilled to share my recent experience as a guest on The Schoolyard Podcast with my dear friend and fellow educator, Nancy Chung. Our conversation centered around the transformative potential of reflective teaching practices and the importance of integrating Social Emotional Learning in the classroom.
During the episode, I shared my insights on how educators can set meaningful goals, adapt their teaching strategies to meet the needs of their students, while fostering a classroom environment that supports both academic growth and emotional well-being. Nancy has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration throughout my journey as an educator, and with over a decade of friendship, she has seen the power of the BISON firsthand.
Overcoming Obstacles and Inspiring "Aha!" Moments
One of the key points I emphasized during our discussion was the significance of addressing challenging student behaviors through a combination of reflective practices, SEL strategies, and a nurturing classroom environment. I shared real-life examples and success stories from my work with Teaching Inside Out, highlighting the positive impact this approach can have on transforming classrooms and empowering both teachers and students.
By consistently reflecting on and refining our teaching practices, we can design classrooms that are engaging, dynamic, and responsive to the diverse needs of our students. I gave my NUMBER ONE sentence frame for students of ALL ages to start setting those intentional goals in the classroom right away. And yes, it really can be as simple as one single sentence frame.
Cultivating a Supportive Community and Sharing Valuable Insights
Another highlight of our conversation was the importance of building a supportive community of educators. Through SELebrate Good Times, I am truly committed to creating a space where teachers from across the nation are able to come together to share ideas, collaborate, and feel valued and appreciated. Nancy and I both agree, we are absolutely NOT meant to do this work alone.
I am also excited to have had the opportunity to discuss my upcoming book, Becoming The BISON, during the episode. This book is a culmination of all the storms that I've experienced, rant through, and come out on the other side stronger, more capable, and a hell of a lot more resilient. It's more than a mindset and a movement. It's a call to action to create a complete REVOLUTION in education by filling in the cracks in the education system, and I can't wait to share even more with all of you soon!
I am deeply grateful to Nancy for giving me the chance to share my thoughts and experiences with her audience. I know that our conversation will resonate with educators at every stage of their career, inspiring them to embrace reflective practices and SEL in their classrooms.
As educators, we have the power to shape the future through the lives we touch every day in our classrooms. By embracing reflective teaching practices and SEL, we can ignite a positive transformation that extends far beyond the walls of our schools.
